The advantage of Windows is that it is so widespread that for the non technical its the obvious root of least resistance. It does suffer technical problems but a quick reboot of the PC will usually overcome this. Due to its widespread penetration it is a constant target of hackers and other malware.
For the design oriented the Apple Mac seems the obvious choice due to its many tools in this field. It is also a very stable platform.
For the slightly adventorous Linux is an increasingly goo alternative. It is still however not as simple as windows whe it comes to installing printers and other common devices. Thats not to say its not as good, but it has the difficulty that although increasingly popular it is still playing catch up the time of penetration into the general market. Due to its opensource nature, there are many different versions of it, called distro for distributions.
